OSHA Bloodborne Pathogen Program
The Federal Bloodborne Pathogen Standard was first published by OSHA in 1991. On November 6, 2000, Public law 106-430, the Needlestick Safety and Prevention Act was signed into law revising the Bloodborne Pathogen Standard. The intention of these Standards and law is to minimize the potential for occupational exposure to the Hepatitis B virus and HIV as well as other bloodborne pathogens. Understanding the hazards and potential exposure risks within your organization is the first step in reducing the probability of exposure and thereby decreasing the incidence of infection. There is a tool to help you determine hazards: Hazard Identification Tool
